Dharan's 2045 BS Earthquake incident was the second biggest earthquake of Nepal which occur on 5th Bhadra 2045BS (21 August 1988AD) around 4:54 am for 45 seconds on eastern part of Nepal which was 6.7 rector scale and kills 721 lives overall and 116 lives only in Dharan. Though, the biggest earthquake, bigger than 2045BS incident was on 1990 magh 2 at 2pm which was 8.4 rector scale and kills 8519 lives all over Nepal. Dharan (Nepali: धरान) is a major city in eastern Nepal, in the Sunsari District, situated on foothills of Himalayas with southern tip touching the edge of the Terai at an altitude of 1148 ft (349m). It serves as a trading post between the hilly region and the plains of Terai region. It was once the location of a British Gurkha recruitment center, opened in 1953. The recruitment center is closed and the campus is now the home of BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences since 1993.
